The tensile strength is approximately as follows: 7x = 2lb, 6x = 3lb, 5x = 4lb, 4x = 5lb, 3x =6lb, 2x=8lb, 1x=9lb. Tapered leader has it's advantages in terms of ease of use as well as a very nice presentation. The disadvantages can include the fact that as you change flies and your leader gets shorter, you are also increasing the size and strength of the line where you tie the fly on. As a result, you will need to replace the entire leader with a fresh one. As an alternative, consider building your own tapered leader by tying 8lb leader material to 6lb to 4lb for example. Building your own is less convenient but is more cost effective. It also has the added benefit of only usually having to replace the final thinner piece of material as it shortens on the fly tying end. These tapered leaders are packaged at a price that makes it easier to go with the more convenient option with the best presentation.
