The Hairbug flies are meant to be fished on the surface. This is a fly fisher's equivalent of the "popping" bug for bass and pickerel. This big fly generates plenty of wind drag which will effect your cast if using gear that is too light. Give it quick, short jerks back towards you after casting it out.
